Brass Bound Mandalay Dowry Box From Burma - 1900
A beautifully crafted brass bound Mandalay dowry box from Burma dating to around 1900, constructed from richly patinated hardwood and intricately decorated with etched brass inlay throughout. These highly decorative dowry chests were traditionally commissioned as part of a bride’s marriage trousseau and were intended to store valuable textiles, jewellery and personal possessions.
The exterior is adorned with finely detailed scrolling motifs, geometric borders and stylised floral ornamentation highlighted with brass strapwork and mounts. The reverse features a striking panel of black lacquered elephants beneath crossed flags and crescent motifs, together with the inscription “N.P. Dhelia”, adding a distinctive personal element to the piece.
The interior is equally impressive, with a deeply carved fitted lid incorporating a small mirror and decorative floral details. Beneath sits an arrangement of carved compartments and a removable storage tray, designed for organising jewellery, cosmetics and precious domestic items. The large lower compartment provides further practical storage while demonstrating the remarkable craftsmanship associated with Mandalay workshops at the turn of the century.
Dowry boxes of this quality were produced in Burma during the late Konbaung and early colonial periods, often blending Burmese decorative traditions with Anglo-Indian influences. Today they are highly sought after for both their historical significance and decorative appeal.
Like all our pieces, this dowry chest has been sympathetically restored and retains age-related wear, marks and imperfections consistent with its history and use.
