Jackfruit Wood Door From Kerala - 19th Century

Jackfruit Wood Door From Kerala - 19th Century

This antique traditional door from Kerala, South India is defined by its dramatic iron lock. These locks adorn the doors of historical Ettukettu and Nalukettu architecture. The lock has become a "style statement" for modern houses in Kerala and other parts of India where it's known by its traditional name manichitrathazhu.

The shape of the lock is that of a trident or trisul, one of the symbols of Lord Shiva. The ironwork is all hand crafted and is a culmination of traditional skills and knowledge which has been passed down through the centuries.

The doors are beautifully carved from the very hardwearing jackfruit wood, a hardwood that is termite proof and resistant to fungus.
