Aubergine Leather Trunk From Shanghai - Early 19thC
This is an excellent Qing dynasty Chinese leather trunk. The brasswork on this trunk its excellent and early dating this piece to the early 19th century. The leather hinge has long since corroded and been replaced with hinges as is inevitable on older chests such as this one.Ā
This style has been used for hundreds of years with the classic style changing very little. Made for travelling and storage of clothing they are robust and work well in a contemporary western space as a coffee table, or for storage. Chinese leather trunks come in 4 colours; black, red, cream & aubergine. This piece is aubergine lacquered, the colour is achieved by adding a coloured lacquer onto the tanned leather.
