Brass Bound Teak Indian Military Chest From Rajasthan -19th Century

Brass Bound Teak Indian Military Chest From Rajasthan -19th Century

Thes Anglo-Indian Military chests were originally used by officers of the British Indian Army to carry their kit and personal possessions whilst on tour. This example is from Rajasthan and dates from the 19th century. As they had to withstand a lot of punishment in transit, they were exceptionally well made.

Constructed from teak with brass corners and brass handles, this chest has a large interior storage space and a wooden stop on the back to prevent the lid from falling completely open.

They were made to order by skilled carpenters. Depending on rank, these were re-enforced with corners of brass or iron. The better quality chests have recessed iron and brass work whilst lower quality examples have raised brass and iron work.
