Brass Bound Teak Indian Military Chest -19th Century

These Anglo-Indian Military chests were originally used by officers of the British Indian Army to carry their kit and personal possessions whilst on tour. This example is from Rajasthan and dates from the 19th century. As they had to withstand a lot of punishment in transit, they were exceptionally well made.

Constructed from teak with brass corners and handles, this chest has a large interior storage space complete with a candle compartment. The lid is prevented from falling completely open by a wooden stopper on the back of the chest.Ā
