Nandi Tikka Box From Andhra Pradesh - Ca 1920's

This antique South Indian tikka box is beautifully carved with four Nandi Bulls on each corner. The Nandi Bull is a symbol of Lord Shiva and cows are still revered and continue to wander the streets in India. Tikka boxes were used for storing the tikka, the powder used for marking the forehead of Hindus known as a tikka mark or bindi. In South India, these vessels often carried tikka ash or vibhuti which is used in the same way. Originally this piece would have had a lid which is long since lost.Ā

The box itself is supported on four wheels which gives this piece so much character. Over the years, it has developed a wonderful patina.
