Carved Tribal Cedar Chest From The Kulu Valley - Ca 1920

These Himalayan cedar wood chests come from the Kulu valley in Himachal Pradesh and were used for storage. This piece dates to the early 20th century, circa 1920. They are hewn from cedar wood which is roughly cut into planks with an adze. It is then assembled using wooden pegs. The front is often chip carved with designs that have been used for centuries. Here, a stylised lotus can be seen carved into the front, a symbol of fertility and longevity in Hindu culture.Ā

Due to their shallow size, these boxes work well in bathrooms. Two batons have been added recently to the interior of the lid to stop the top splitting.Ā
