Chinese Altar Table From Shanxi Province - Ca 1930

Chinese Altar Table From Shanxi Province - Ca 1930

This classic Chinese altar table would have been used as a family altar. It dates to the early 20th century, circa 1930. It is constructed in the classic Qing style with scrolled ends with beautifully carved panels and small dragon heads in a geometric pattern in the end carvings. This elegant altar table perfectly suits a corridor or living room. It is constructed from pine wood and has a black burgundy lacquer which has worn in places.Ā

Altar tables were used for ancestor worship in China. Usually, a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well-being of the household. They were always long & narrow in form - a configuration seldom found in antique European furniture.
