This Chinese flower stand dates from the 1930's and is made from a mix of huali (rosewood) and cypress (baimu). The majority of this piece is cypress wood with the central floating panel constructed from huali (rosewood) It has stylized bats carved into the side, a symbol of good luck in China.
This style of table is also known as a tea table and often came in pairs. They were often used as scholars tables for taking notes and transcripts at local courthouses. A pair of these make ideal bedside tables or lamp tables beside a sofa and are very functional pieces in a small apartment, used behind a sofa or in pairs on each side of a mantelpiece.
