Framed Chromolithograph Cotton Bale Advertising Label - Ca 1920

Framed Manchester Cotton Chromolithograph pictorial label used for the advertisement and sale of bales of cloth and individual fabric lengths - printed on paper.

These advertising labels were mostly from Manchester cotton companies who exported their woven, printed fabrics back to India the labels were affixed to the cotton bales. They are a colourful and decorative reminder of the days of the British Raj in India.

Labels like this are unusual to find as they were mostly destroyed during the unpacking of textiles. We sourced these labels in Shekhawati in Rajasthan, whose residents became immensely wealthy trading with the west in Bombay & Calcutta. Much of the wealth was shipped back to Shekhawati where they built impressive havelis.Ā Framed in old gilt frames.
