Red Elm Juicer From Jiangsu - Ca 1900
Originally created to juice fruit and vegetables, this stylish and functional antique Chinese juicer isĀ as perfectly useable today as it was when first made and It would also make a unique decorative ornament.

Purchased together with a juicer dated to 1894, it dates to the late Qing dynasty - circa 1900. Ā

These juicers were found across China and this particular piece is made from jumu (red elm / southern elm / zelkova). The wood suggests it most likely is from Jiangsu province. Red elm (jumu /Ā ę¦ęØ), also known asĀ zelkovaĀ orĀ 'southern elm'Ā is considered a superior wood to yumu, its northern cousin.Ā n.
A similar example can be found on page 185 of "Chinese Furniture: A Guide to collecting antiques" by Mazurkewich (Fig. 481).
