These Chinese red leather trunks from Shanghai date to the end of the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911) - circa 1890. They have raised gilt painted shou symbols as well as their own stands, and are in great condition for over one hundred years old
Chinese leather trunks have been used for many hundreds of years with the classic style changing very little. This parcel gilt work style appeared at the end of the 19th century. These chests were made for traveling and storage of clothing they are robust and work well in a contemporary Western space as a coffee table, or for storage.
