The emblem of deer flanking the wheel of dharma predates Buddhism to at least 2500 BC. It represents the following of Buddhas teachings from the beginning when Buddha made first discourse at the Deer Park in Sarnath.Ā 

The deer (sha-ba in Tibetan) represents natural harmony and purity. A pair like this is male and female and represent harmony happiness and fidelity.Ā 

Makara has the trunk of an elephant, the jaw of a crocodile, the tusks of a boar, and the feet of a lion. It is the tenth sign of the Indian zodiac corresponding to Capricorn.
