This antique Chinese square table is ideal for use as a coffee table. Made in the 19th century from a hybrid of unusual woods, this technique was common during the Ming dynasty, but through the Qing dynasty, it became common practice to craft pieces from a single species of wood. The center panel is elm wood surrounded by an oak border. The legs and bottom strut are jichimu (chicken-wing wood) with the top strutts made from walnut.
Jichimu is a well respected hardwood in China and is indigenous to Hainan island, the same island from which the world famous huanghuali wood hails from.
