
Tibetan Sutra Prayer Book Cover - 17th Century
This antique 1th century book cover is a Tibetan sutra cover and carved from a single piece of wood. The central panel is slightly raised framing eightĀ Tibetan auspicious symbols. From left to right, the parasol, golden fishes, conch, lotus, theĀ treasure vase, endless knot, the victory banner, & the Wheel of Dharma. Each symbol has its own meaning and as a composite, they bring good fortune.Ā

Wood was scarce in Tibet and a highly valued commodity. These works were seen only by Tibetan monks. These Tibetan book covers were originally polychromed with red and gold pigments, however, this is long since worn away and been replaced with layers of ghee and yak butter soot.Ā
Ā
The reverse of these covers is usually plain, however, this features later 20th century painting depicting three Buddhas. One is the medicine Buddha.Ā
