Turned Lacquer Vase From Sindh - Ca 1940
Lacquer vases have become rare in India and are excellent collector's pieces. This vase is from Sindh and dates to the early 20th century.
International exhibitions in the 19th century stimulated traditional crafts around the world. Sindh became well known for its high quality lac-turned wares. Good quality lacquerware is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Ā
Lacquering is done by the craftsman on a hand-powered lathe. The wooden piece is spun and a lac stick is pressed against the piece. As the piece spins friction softens the lac which coats the surface of the wood. Quite intricate designs can be created by the craftsman using different techniques.
