Brass Bound Teak Chest From Kutch - 19th Century

Brass Bound Teak Chest From Kutch - 19th Century

This substantial 19th century teak chest originates from the Kutch region of western India and is a fine example of traditional Indian storage furniture, built for both durability and long-distance travel. Constructed from solid teak, the chest is reinforced throughout with applied brass straps and studwork, lending it both structural strength and decorative richness.

The front is ornamented with pressed and engraved brass motifs, including circular geometric medallions and a central stylised foliate design, all secured with hand-set brass studs. Heavy brass corner mounts and broad brass bands further protect the chest, while substantial brass carrying handles are fitted to each side, emphasising its original functional purpose. The hinged lid opens to reveal a spacious interior fitted with an internal candle box, alongside a retaining chain designed to prevent the hinges from overextending and protect the lid during use. Richly worn surfaces and a deep, aged patina speak to decades of handling and use, making this an evocative and highly decorative piece.
