Brass Bound Jackfruit Chest From South India - 18th Century

Brass Bound Jackfruit Chest From South India - 18th Century

This is a nice early example of a Jackfruit wood Indian storage chest from South India. It has brass corners and hand forged iron lifting handles. The interior is spacious with an internal candle box. A sturdy chain stops the chest lid from falling back straining the hinges.Ā

This chest would have been used as a dowry chest, valuables such as textiles, family jewellery and cash would have been stored inside.Ā

The back plate for the handles on the sides is in the shape of the auspicious bat which was considered lucky in many cultures.Ā
